Richmond Plains
Established in 1991, Richmond Plains is a very small family vineyard. Located near Nelson on top of the South Island of New Zealand. All grapes are organically grown with intensive manual techniques to care for our vines.
Richmond Plains is a pioneer of organic wine and cultivates New Zealand's first certified organic sauvignon blanc and pinot noir. They also produce Pinot Gris, Riesling, Chardonnay, Rose, Syrah and Blanc de Noir.
Richmond Plains believes in making great wines by working with nature in the vineyards. Using organic methods, they can really express the character of the terroir in the wines. They feed the soil and vines with organic brews and compost tea. Disease is managed with natural beneficial organisms such as Trichoderma and Bacilus Subtilus that surpass unwanted organisms. This lush green vineyard creates an attractive habitat for a variety of native birds, lizards, butterflies such as the monarch and the admiral, and beneficial insects such as ladybugs.
The Koru or Unfolding Fern logo on the label comes from New Zealand Maori mythology and symbolizes a new beginning, flourishing life and growth. Just as every season breathes new life into the vineyard and makes new wines, so the flavors of previous vintages develop and unfold gently as they mature.
