The name La Baume has several meanings in Occitan (the name of a group of local dialects). 'Balme or 'Baume' would mean rock shelter (cave).
In the Middle Ages, the story goes, itinerant bronze and glass sellers hid their wares in these caves. These secret places were known as 'Baumes'.
The winemakers of Domaine de La Baume are proud of their vineyards, which they call the 'hidden treasure of the Languedoc'.
Domaine de la Baume is a domain from the Languedoc. It is located in the town of Servian, near Beziers. The domain has a long history dating back to the 18th century. It was one of the more recent owners who would leave quite a mark on this domain. In 1990, Domaine de la Baume was purchased by the Australian wine production company Thomas Hardy & Sons. They have unleashed a revolution in the south of France in the field of wine production and grape growing. Hardy brought modern techniques from Australia and released their vision of how to grow grapes. They were among the first to see the benefit of harvesting at night. The coolness of the night preserves the freshness in the grapes and also ensures that the juice does not ferment prematurely.
Hardy's mission was to show France that you can also make traditional French wine with modern techniques. The French were, to say the least, quite suspicious and were not charmed by those Australian cowboys who came to explain how wine should be made. Yet Hardy & Sons persevered and Domaine de la Baume has grown into one of the most beautiful wineries in the south of France. In 2002, Hardy & Sons was acquired by Constellation. This company has nothing to do with old world wines and sold Domaine de la Baume to Les Grands Chais de France in 2003.
Les Grands Chais de France is a wine producer with its own Chateaux, Domaines and vineyards throughout France. For the 'Domaine de la Baume series' they use grapes from their own vineyards. These wines are also varietal wines. The Domaine de la Baume is available from us as Chardonnay, Viognier, Merlot, Syrah and Pinot Noir Rosé. All wines have an excellent price/quality ratio.
