Description
The Domain Nittardi is located between Castellina and Panzano in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. Nittardi was first mentioned as "Nectar Dei" in 1183. In the 16th century, the winery belonged to Michelangelo Buonarroti, who produced his own wine here. He is known to have sent his wine to the Pope in Rome as a "real gift".
The wine Nectar Dei is the Super Premium Wine of Nittardi and was baptized with the old name Nittardi from 1183, and according to tradition, the first bottles of Nectar Dei are offered to Pope Francesco.
Nectar Dei is deep red in color with purple hints. Ripe notes of cassis, blackberry and raspberry in the nose combined with vanilla, pink pepper, tobacco and leather. Nicely concentrated with luscious, round tannins and elegant notes like black cherries and liquorice on the palate. The wine has a long and rich finish where the complexity of the wine shows through. Excellent for all varieties of red meat and game. Best served at around 18 ° C; 2 hours before serving, uncork and decant if possible. Nectar Dei 2013 has a special aging potential of 20+ years.
The grapes used for Ad Astra grow in the Maremma vineyard called Mongibello delle Mandorlaie, between Scansano and Magliano, just 8 km from the sea at an altitude of 250 meters. The soil is mainly sand with granite and schist and clay underneath. The 2013 vintage can be described as a classic and balanced vintage with lower temperatures compared to the two previous vintages: 2011 and 2012. After a cold winter and a real spring, summer arrived late and the grapes developed slowly but created a healthy balance between sugar and acidity. In Maremma, the harvesting of the Merlot started in the first week of September and a month later with Petit Verdot.
Aging: 24 months in French barrique, 6 months in a concrete barrel, followed by 6 months in bottle maturation.
