The grapes come from a single vineyard, Massipa, planted in 1974. One half contains white Grenache, the other Chenin Blanc. Both grapes are pressed together and fermented with indigenous yeasts. First, the wine matures for 3 months in cement vats. Then, the wine matures for 12 months, sur lie, in large 1200-litre vats.
Scala Dei is a historic winery, located at the foot of the Sierra del Montsant mountains. The building dates back to 1163, founded by Carthusian monks from Provence. These monks were the first to start growing wine in Priorat. In 1973, Cellers Scala Dei was the first winery to sell bottled wines. They are the founders of the Priorat appellation. The wines of Scala Dei are the authentic expression of the terroir; of the rugged landscape, the characteristic ‘licorella’ slate soil, the intense climate and the old vines. Scala Dei is the only winery in Priorat that also has vineyards in the highest areas of Priorat at 800 m altitude. The estate owns 90 hectares of vineyards spread over 41 different locations with an average age of around 50 years. This means that the Scala Dei wines have a very limited production, are incredibly concentrated and powerful with a great complexity of flavors that also have a high aging capacity.
