Spectacular Italian white wine from the indigenous grillo grape in western Sicily. Yellow fruit and almond in the taste, something of dry grass. Slightly aromatic and above all refined. Highly recommended by us! Read more
Fondo Antico is a well known name in western Sicily. A very old (antico) company that has always kept up with the times. That volume and quality can go hand in hand is demonstrated by this producer from Trapani. Fondo Antico owns no less than 80 hectares of vineyards, so only high-quality fruit from its own domain is used for production. The emphasis is on autochthonous grape varieties including Grillo, Inzolia, Grecanico and Nero d'Avola, although small amounts of international varieties such as Chardonnay, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon have also become established. This producer offers wines where drinkability is united with authenticity, ripe sunny fruit with character and individuality; Considering the price, we cannot recommend these wines enough.
In ancient times, Sicily was the 'bridge' from the Orient to Europe, also with regard to the import of grapes from Greece and Turkey that eventually found their way to most European wine regions. The region is best known for its volcanic soil conditions, especially around the Etna volcano. The island has invested heavily in modern techniques over the last 20 years, resulting in many popular and modern wines. Nero d'Avola is the common red grape in Sicily that produces a variety of wines. The ethereal nerello mascalese is often mainly responsible for the great red wines of Etna. For white, the grillo, the insolia and the cataratto are the most used. And let's not forget the carricante, important in the brilliant white of Etna DOC. Western Sicily, Trapani area. Not the most famous Sicilian area for grape growing, but some wineries still manage to perform at a high level. And for a very reasonable price. Quite warm of course, but the Mediterranean Sea provides a moderating influence.
