Arneis is one of the oldest white grape varieties in Piedmont and especially famous in the Roero wine region around the town of Canale. This region is located just north of Alba, Barolo and Barbaresco, starting north of the Tenaro River that flows here. Here, on the sandy and calcareous subsoil, this grape feels very much at home. Certainly in the hands of Massimo and Roberto, the second generation of the Malvirà family who have been making wine since the 1950s.
The azienda Malvirà is located in the middle of Canale, in the heart of Roero: the region where this winery belongs to the group of best producers. The vineyards face south-northeast, at an altitude between 260 and 320 meters; it is spread over 6.5 hectares and has clay-limestone soil, making it suitable for both Nebbiolo and Arneis. The grapes grow on the five different terroirs that Malvira has at its disposal.
The harvest is done manually in the middle of September. The fermentation takes place in large stainless steel tanks, after which the wine also matures in these tanks for 4-8 months. Then the wine is bottled. Some wines undergo (partial) wood aging. Then the wine is bottled.
Malvirà produces refined and expressive terroir wines using organic methods. In the cellar, all wines are labeled with tarot symbols, which tell something in a special and intriguing way about the sensory experience that awaits the wine drinker.
And if you are also looking for a beautiful holiday address? The family also has a beautiful hotel with a refined restaurant: Villa Tiboldi. Of course, their own wines are also served there. Recommended!
